The Vendetta:
Part 3

While they were waiting for Sam to appear Ron asked the President,
"Sir if I may use your phone I'll get the two agents that I am
assigning to watch Sam to come up."

"Of course.

Picking up the phone and dialing, "Janice, could you send Agents Loyd
and Johnson up to the Oval Office please?"

"Right away," Janice replied.

"What do you need sir?" Sam asks a few minutes later as he walks into
the office.

"Ron has something he needs to talk to you about."

"Sam, a little while ago I got a call from William Melrose. He is the
director of a federal agency. He received some information from two
of his agents that a hit has been put out on you."

"What?" Sam asked, slightly shocked as he slowly sank down in a chair.

"Sam, I'm assigning two agents to watch you till we find out who's
behind this."

"Why would someone want to have me killed?"

"Our source says that it's for you ruining someone's boss."

"That could be anyone," the President said.

"We'll get to the bottom of this. Though I've never met the two
agents who have been assigned to solve this one, I have heard of their
reputation. Not much gets past them."

"I want to meet these two agents Ron," the President said.

"Of course, I'll set something up when I talk to them."

At that moment Mrs Landingham appeared at the door, "there are two
agents here to see Ron"

"Send them in please," the President told his secretary.

After the agents have been shown in Ron said, "Sam, Mr President, this
is Agent Jordan Loyd and Agent Brent Johnson."

After the men have all shook hands Agent Loyd spoke up, "Brent and I
have talked and I'm going to take the day shift and he's taking the
night shift. Unless you have any objections to that sir."

"No that sounds fine," Ron replied

"Mr Seaborn, we need to know how late you plan to work tonight so that
Brent knows where and when to go to relieve me later," Jordan said.

In as distracted tone of voice, Sam replied, "About 9:00 unless
something comes up. Oh, and by the way, call me Sam."

At this information Agent Johnson nodded and left the room.

"Sam are you alright?" the President asked.

"I'm fine."

"Ron we're going to have to let the rest of the senior staff in on
this. They're going to wonder why Sam is under protection," the
President said.

"Would you like me to inform them sir?"

"No, I'll handle it. Just keep us advised of any new
information.""Ron, let me know when you have that meeting set up."

"Yes sir," Ron replied and then turns and leaves the room.

"Mrs Landingham could you please call the rest of the staff in here
please?" the President asked before walking to the door connecting his
office to Leo's.

"Leo, could you please come in here for a few minutes?"

Taking one look at Sam's face, Leo turned to his best friend and
asked, "What happened?"

"I'll tell you when the rest of the senior staff gets here."

The silence in the room was strained for the next few minutes as they
waited for everyone else to show up.

Toby was the first to arrive, with C.J. just a few steps behind.
"What's going on?" C.J. asked, sensing the mood in the room.

"We're waiting on Josh," Leo said.

When Josh did walk in just a couple of minute's later, he took one
look at his best friends face and unknowingly echoed Leo's earlier
question, "What happened?"

"Sam?" the President said looking at Sam for his permission to
continue. Seeing Sam's nod he continued, "A little earlier today two
federal agents were tipped off by a source that there has been a hit
put out on Sam. The director of The Agency then contacted Ron
Butterfield, who then informed me. Ron also has assigned two agents
to watch Sam till The Agency has gotten to the bottom of it."

Questions exploded from everyone in the room. "Quiet!" the President
shouted. "We can only answer one question at a time. Leo?"

"Do we know who is behind this?" Leo asked.

"No, not at this time. The agents who are on the case though are two
of the very best in the business and have a great record at solving
the most unsolvable cases. Now if there isn't anything else I have
some work to do."

Looking at his staff the President said, "I told Ron that I want to
meet with these two agents. Any of you that want to meet with them too
can do so at that time. Now I suggest that we all get back to work."

Taking one last look around the room everyone but Leo left, the agent
trailing after Sam.

"Leo, when are we ever going to catch a break?" The President said, a
sad look in his eyes

"I don't know Jed, I just don't know."

Meanwhile back at The Agency.

Lee and Amanda sat in Lee's office, Amanda having just broke the news
to her agents that they had been pulled off the case before they even
got a chance to start. "So Lee, where do you think that we should
start with this one?"

"I'll put out some feelers to the family, and why don't you look into
what Mr Seaborn was doing before he began work for President Bartlet."

"We should probably meet with Mr Seaborn as well," Amanda said.

"Which ever one of us speaks with Ron Butterfield first should bring
it up."

"Ok, well let's get started then," Amanda said as she got up and left
to go back up to her office and Lee picked up the phone to start
calling his old informant ring.

A half an hour later Lee slammed his phone down in frustration. He
had either been unable to get an answer to his calls or they had no
information for him. He hoped Amanda was having better luck than he
was. The phone rang a moment later, and after picking it up barked
"Stetson."

"It's me Lee," Amanda said. "Turns out that Sam was a lawyer before
going to work for President Bartlet. So that's probably something we
would want to pursue."

"That's a real good possibility. Though lord knows that being a
politician that he has made him enough enemies."

"Any luck yet on your end?"

"No, I have a few calls out there though."

"Have you talked to Ron Butterfield yet?"

"Not yet I would guess that they probably have a few things to set up
at the White House first."

"Ok, well give me a call when he calls."

"Ok, I'll talk to you later."

"Love you."

"Love you too."

A few moments later the phone rings. "Stetson here."

"Mr Stetson, this is Ron Butterfield."

"I've been expecting your call Mr Butterfield."

"Why don't you call me Ron, Mr Stetson. I hope that Mr Melrose was
able to convince you and your wife to take this assignment."

"Yes he did. And you should call me Lee."

"Good, because the President wants the best and from what I have heard
you and your wife are the best there is. Now do you have anything new
for me?"

"At this moment we really don't have anything new for you, but we
would like to meet with Mr Seaborn to ask him a few questions."

"I can arrange that. In fact the President would like to talk to you
and your wife as well."

"What time would you like us there?"

"Let me speak with the President and see when he has some free time
available.

"I'll be waiting for your call."

After he had hung up with Ron, Lee then picked up the phone and called
Amanda. "Hay, I just got off the phone with Ron Butterfield. It
seems that the President wants to meet us, so he's going to set up a
meeting with both the President Bartlet and Sam Seaborn."

"The President?"

"Yes the President"

"All right, just let me know when and where"

"I will," Lee tells her before hanging up the phone.
