The Vendetta:
Part 9

Christy Ambrose

"I think we have him," Amanda said as she walked into Lee's office.

"Ok, shoot."

"I pulled up this guys bank records and phone records, that's pretty
much what did it. The bank record show a two fairly large payments to
two separate accounts. Then the phone records show ever calls with
both his home phone and cell phone to two numbers. Looking up these
numbers I found that they where both ex-cons who had gotten out of
jail less than six months ago, both for aggravated assault, and both
also had several murder charges that had been dropped for lack of
evidence. I then checked their bank records and found that they both
had a very large deposit made into their accounts by Jacob Packer."

"Good work love, Now we need to get teams to watch Packer and these
two bit ex-cons."

"Already done, also have a request in to Billy to tap their phones. I
don't think the request will be a problem though."

"Well, then next step would be to go and talk to Sam."

"Already called the White House and set up a meeting."

"Looks like you've already taken care of everything."

"Hey, what can I say, I'm good. Besides I learned from the best there
is," Amanda said with a smile.

"You sure are, and you most definitely did. Now lets go before you
completely finish up the case without me."

At the White House a short time later.

"Lee and Amanda Stetson are here to see you," Kathy said stepping into
Sam's office.

"Send them in."

"I think we may know who is behind this," Lee said.

"You do?"

"Yeah, we think we do."

"Well, hold on a minute, let me call the President and see if he's
available, because he's going to want to hear this."

A few minutes later Amanda and Lee were once again seated in the Oval
Office with the rest of the President and his Senior Staff. The
President had also called Ron Butterfield up to hear the information.

"Tell us what you have," the President said.

"Ok, Sam do you remember a case you had against a man named Jacob
Packer?" Amanda asked.

"Yeah, I remember. Jacob Packer wasn't a man he was the type of scum
that gave politicians." Sam replied "I was the prosecuting attorney
in the trial. He had raped a friend of mine who had worked in his
office and then beat her within an inch of her life. So I completely
threw the book at him. When I was done no one who was anyone in New
York politics would touch him. All of his friends publicly disowned
him."

Amanda said. "Well, one of our sources in New York had found the
reference to the case and looked it up. All of the media coverage and
everything surrounding it."

"From that, she found that this guy had promised to make you pay for
ruining him," Lee started

"Just because he swore to make Sam pay, why does that make him the guy
who's behind this?" Josh questioned.

"No, that by it's self doesn't mean it's him. But, what does lead us
to think it's him is his activities the past few weeks, since he has
been released from prison," Amanda replied.

"Almost immediately after being released from prison he contacted two
ex-cons who had also recently gotten out. Both of these guys had been
in jail for aggravated assault and had murder charges against them
dropped from lack of evidence. He then deposited large sums of money
into both of their accounts. Phone records show that he communicates
with them at least once every two days."

"You realize none of this is solid proof," Ron spoke up

"Yes we realize that. That's why we have taps on all three mens
phones, and agents trailing them as we speak."

"Why don't we just bring them in and question them?" Toby asked.

"Well, if we do that we probably could get one of them to confess in
return for a plea bargain. But if our agents can get the information
that we need by trailing them, then we will have our evidence and have
no need to plea bargain," Amanda replied.

Before anyone could answer, the pagers on Lee and Amanda's belts went
off. After checking them and sharing a triumphant look Lee said,
"Excuse me a moment this could be what we've been waiting for."

After a few moment's of hushed conversation, Lee shut his phone off
and looked around with a big smile on his face. "We've got them," he
told everyone. The three of them met today to discuss the failed
attempt on Sam and our agents caught every last word. They are all
under arrest and on the way back to the Agency to be questioned.

A cheer went up from everyone sitting in the room. "It's over," Sam
breathed.

"You have this President's warm and grateful thanks," the President
told Lee and Amanda. "If there is anything you need don't hesitate to
ask."

"We'll keep that in mind sir, and on that note we'll leave you to your
celebration," Lee said as they walked out the door.

Ron Butterfield caught up with them just outside. "That was
tremendous work that the two of you did. If you ever want to change
jobs, I'm sure that I could find a couple of spots in the Service for
you."

After looking at his wife Lee said, "Thanks Ron, but my wife and I are
more comfortable working in the shadows."
