Angels Under My Bed

Dani Beth

His breathing became labored and she slipped out of bed, grabbing her
robe and padding across his hardwood floor.

They always seemed to go back to his place after a fight and clenching
her fists, she recalled the bitter shouting match that they had in her
office after his lawyer stopped by to see him.

He had told her that she wasn't sleeping and she told him that he was
wrong. The awful truth was that he was right, but she wasn't going to
allow him to be right. Not then. She was in a fighting mood and he was
an easy target.

Afterwards, he stayed in her office, preparing some speech on his laptop
and she began to write notes for an afternoon briefing.

It was when Josh entered just as she began to slip into a peaceful half-sleeping
state did Sam snap.

"Sleeping on the job, C.J.? Tsk, tsk, I may have to tell this to the
boss man."

She knew he was joking, but Sam was angry still from the fight before.

With a deathly look in his eyes, he turned to his friend, and his tone
becoming icy, told him, "Get out and let her rest."

The way he spoke and looked not only frightened Josh, but C.J. as well.
She sat up and stared at him, open-mouthed.

"Sam," she tried, rushing in her words. "He didn't..."

"I don't care," he silenced her. "You need your rest. It's no laughing
matter."

And then with a look in her direction, Josh was gone.

Going back into the bedroom after getting some water, she placed her
robe on a chair and slipped back under the light sheet, letting Sam shift
and put his arm around her.

Lost in her thoughts, she was barely aware of the fact that he had awakened
and was now tangling his hands through her hair.

Moaning softly, she turned to her other side and hungrily captured her
lips with his. Moving on top of her, his body crushing her to the mattress,
he crashed his hips with hers. A soft cry from her throat was swallowed
by him as he descended his lips onto her's again.

Placing her hands on his shoulders, she pushed him with a deep breath.
"We must stop."

Worry lines appeared on his face and she couldn't help but giggle. "No,
you're not losing your touch. It's just that you testify..." She was
cut off by him kissing her throat.

"We promised not to bring politics into the bedroom," Sam growled into
her hair.

Annoyed, C.J. told him, "We're part of that business, remember. And I
don't want you distracted."

"I promise you, I won't be distracted. How could I be with all the cameras
and power hungry lawyers inspecting me?" he asked, staring into her.

"And what's with us promising things at every chance we get?" she squeaked
out, not meaning to.

Balancing himself by his elbow, he raised an eyebrow. "What? You want
to take back our promises to stay by one another through this?"

Her forehead became amiss with crinkles and she shook her head angrily.
"No, I...I don't know where that came from." C.J. yawned. "Mmm, sorry."

"Are you going to give in and just agree that I'm right that you need
sleep?"

She rolled her eyes and rolled over to look out the window. Closing her
eyes, she prayed silently.

"There must be angels watching over us."

She groaned, sick of that line.

"No, I really believe that they have been hiding from us. Probably under
the bed."

Letting laughter roll off his tongue, he kissed her hair and asked, "So
there are Angels under my bed?"

"Under your bed, in your bed and above your bed," C.J. laughed along
with him. Tugging at the sheet, she let him wrap his arms around her.
"Now who's talking? You need your sleep if you want to be coherent during
the trial tomorrow."

Letting her eyes droop softly, she brushed her arm along the floor and
under the bed, just to make sure.
