Good Friends
Melissa
Toby was sound asleep when his phone started to ring. He reluctantly
reached for the receiver and picked up.
"What!" Toby screamed in the phone.
"I know it's late sir, is this Toby Ziegler?"
"That depends."
"On what?"
"Who this is and what you want."
"Mr. Ziegler, this is the police department."
Toby sat up in his bed very quickly.
"What happened?"
"We arrested someone earlier tonight that says he knows you."
"Who?"
"Sam Seaborn."
Toby got quiet and pulled his hand up and started to rub his forehead.
"Mr. Ziegler?"
"Yeah," Toby said in almost a whisper.
"It's too late to do anything now. Besides, Mr. Seaborn is passed out
in one of our cells. If you want, you can come get him in the morning
around eight."
"I'll be there."
"Thank you, sir." The police officer hung the phone up.
Toby reached over again and hung the receiver up.
"Who was that?"
Toby looked over at C.J., who was lying next to him and shook his head.
"Don't worry about it, go back to sleep." Toby leaned over and kissed
her on the lips, then laid back down and tried to go to sleep.
Toby was up and down all night. He tried to sleep, but he couldn't.
He hated it when this happened. He hated it when someone that he
knew got into trouble. He couldn't help but worry.
"Good morning. You're up early."
Toby turned around from the coffee machine that he was trying to fix
and saw C.J standing there wearing his Yankee shirt.
"I didn't really go back to sleep. I thought that I would come out
here and try to fix this stupid coffee machine." He looked down at
the machine. "But it doesn't seem to want to work."
C.J smiled at him and walked over to where he was standing. She leaned
in and kissed him on the lips. Then she gently pushed him to the side.
Toby looked at her and smiled. He saw that she saw him because she smiled
too. He looked up and down her long body and chuckled.
"What is so funny?" C.J asked without stopping trying to fix the
coffee machine.
"Nothing. You are just one sexy woman."
Toby got behind her and put his arms around her. He kissed her neck a
couple of times and felt her giggle. Just then she stepped away from
the coffee machine. She turned around and kissed Toby on the lips.
They kissed for about a minute, then Toby smelled something. He
pulled away, but not far.
"What is that smell?"
C.J put her arms around Toby and kissed him. She pulled away a little
and smiled.
"It's coffee, I fixed it." C.J smiled. She loved it when she could do
something Toby couldn't. She knew it drove him crazy.
"You fixed it!" Toby spun around and looked at the coffee machine and
saw that coffee was being made. He turned and looked at C.J. "You
know, if you were not the love of my life, I would hate you."
C.J smiled and kissed Toby again.

It was eight thirty when Toby got to the jail. He had told the
police officer who he was and whom he was there to get and they went
to get Sam.
"Here he is. If I were you, Toby, I would take him home for a shower."
Toby looked at Sam who looked half-dead. Sam could barely open his
eyes.
"Could you please not talk so loud?" Sam asked in the softest voice he
had.
"What the hell happened to his face?" Toby looked at Sam and saw a
black eye and a fat lip.
"That's what we arrested him for. He got in a bar fight with some
other guy."
"Where's the other guy?"
"Locked up. Probably for a long time. So happens that that guy has
been beating up on his wife and kids and Sam found out about it. The
man's wife told Sam about it and that caused Sam to go after him. So
happens that Sam and the wife used to be best friends in high school.
Her face looked pretty bad and Sam asked her what happened. She told
him everything. I don't know why, but she did."
Toby looked at Sam who was barely aware of what was happening.
"So, Sam, you're somewhat of a hero."
Sam didn't say anything and started to walk outside. He almost lost
his balance, but Toby helped him stay on his feet.
"Thanks for calling, officer."
"No problem."
****
Toby took Sam to Sam's house. He had called the White House and said
that they both were going to be a little late. At Sam's house, Sam
took a shower and changed into his suit and tie. He was starting to
come around after he took five aspirin and a cold shower. When Sam
walked out to his kitchen, he saw Toby doing something near the stove.
"What are you doing?"
"Making you some breakfast. You can't go to work on an empty stomach.
You need to eat something."
"I didn't think that I even had anything here for breakfast."
"Well, you didn't have much, but I found about four eggs and some
milk. I am making you scrambled eggs."
"I like over easy."
"Shut up. You'll eat what I make you. Now sit down and tell me what
happened last night, Hercules." Toby chuckled at his little joke.
"Very funny."
Toby finished with the eggs and put them on a plate for Sam. He
brought them over to him and placed it in front of him and sat next
to him.
"Thank you."
"Yeah. Now what happened?"
"I don't really remember all that much. I remember seeing Cindy, my
friend from high school, and I remember her talking to me. Her face
was pretty messed up, so I asked her what happened. She started to
cry and told me that her husband hit her. After that, I don't
remember anything." Sam started on his eggs.
Toby just looked at Sam for a little bit. He felt respect for him. He
knew how much Sam hated men that hit woman; he hated it. Sam would do
anything for anyone if they asked him to. That was a problem: Sam was
too nice. But Toby respected that. He respected any man that stood
up for himself and others in trouble.
"I'm proud of you, Sam."
Sam looked up and nearly choked on his food.
"What did you just say?" Sam asked in amazement.
"I said I am proud of you. Don't look so shocked, Sam," Toby said
defensively.
"Sorry. It's just you've never said that to me before." Sam
smiled. "Thanks, Toby."
"Yeah, well, don't tell anyone I said that, okay? I have a reputation to
uphold."
Both man laughed and looked at each other.
"Thanks for being a good friend, Toby."
"Don't mention it," Toby said while smiling.
