Rosslyn Long-term Care-Sam's Room

Sam was still relishing the fact that he had scared away Donna, the President, and Leo. At first he had felt guilty because of what he had done to Donna, but after his meeting with the President he realized he had nothing to feel guilty about. He wasn't sure where his sudden meanness was coming from but he kind of liked it. He was still contemplating this when the door creaked open.

"Hi Sam." Mandy stated brightly.

"Hello Mandy." Sam stated coldly.

"Still a little sore about my having your job I see." Mandy replied as she plopped down into the chair by Sam's bed.

"You won't have it for long." Sam replied icily.

"I think I might have it a little while longer. I mean especially if you send the President scurrying out of your room again. I must say Sam that not many people would have the guts to do what you just did." Mandy stated in awe.

"Thanks." Sam stated tersely.

"Oh you can get mad at me all you want Sam, but you know that I am telling you the truth. I know that you are upset with the fact that you had to be replaced but come on what did you expect them to do? Toby had to write the State of The Union address along with a ton of other speeches, and you expected them to just let him write them all by himself? Boy you really are delusional." Mandy replied wickedly.

"What do you mean I really am delusional?" Sam demanded.

"Right after the fire you were saying some pretty messed up things I guess. Talking to a person that wasn't there and all that type of stuff. It was really weird because then all of a sudden you were in a coma and didn't wake up until today." Mandy answered sweetly.

"That didn't mean that they had to replace me with you." Sam spat out.

"Very clever Sam. See I was aiming for Josh's job but that didn't quite work out very well. So I was thrilled to be able to have your job. I mean since Toby is like my idol and all. It has really been a great learning experience to work with him. He's my favorite writer." Mandy taunted.

"Where did you come up with that?" Sam asked after he realized that she must have read something stupid that he jotted down in a notebook one boring afternoon.

"I found it at your desk. It was really touching." Mandy replied as she removed a fake tear from her eye.

"You had no right to read that!" Sam demanded.

"I wouldn't have had to if you hadn't written it in notes for a speech that I had to finish for you." Mandy replied.

"So why are you here anyway?" Sam demanded.

"I just wondered if you were going to kick Josh's ass again. That was kinda cool that you did it when he was in the Intensive Care Unit, again I doubt many people would have the guts to do that man." Mandy replied.

"I did what?" Sam asked in an outraged voice.

"Oh I guess it must have been when you were until the influence of that drug. But you really beat the hell out of Josh when he was in a coma, well he's still in a coma, but don't worry I doubt he will know that you ever hit him." Mandy replied.

"You are lying!" Sam yelled.

"I'm afraid not Sam. They had to restrain you to your bed and everything. But it turned out that the doctor who was treating you wasn't really a doctor and she had given you some mind-altering drug of some sort. But then she gave you an overdose and it was sleepy time for both you and Josh." Mandy replied.

"Why didn't anyone else tell me this?" Sam asked.

"Well Grumpy did you really give anyone a chance too?" Mandy asked.

"They still could have told me." Sam protested.

"Uh huh sure. Sam if you are going to play the mean persona that it appears you are trying to play, then I think you had better work a little bit harder on it. You can't play mean and expect to still be treated like the other Sam got treated. If you are going to be an asshole to people, you have to not give a damn about what they do or don't say to you." Mandy offered.

"Why does it seem like I am talking to the devil?" Sam murmured.

"Oh I'm not the devil, I'm just a spawn." Mandy replied.

"I must admit it was cool to see them all slither out of her like they were frightened of me." Sam replied.

"Take it from me, being evil is a lot more fun." Mandy replied.

"I guess I will try it for awhile." Sam replied.

"Good Sam, let me be the first to welcome you to the dark side." Mandy said as she extended her hand, which Sam shook.

"You know what the best part of all of today was?" Sam asked.

"What Sam?" Mandy asked.

"The look on the President's face was priceless." Sam murmured.

"Yeah evil has its way of doing that to people." Mandy answered with a smile, realizing that keeping Sam mean could just be the way for her to keep his job.

Rosslyn Long-term Care-Josh's Room

Josh woke up a little while after Leo left and he wondered when the parade of visitors would start. He figured that Donna would probably be the first, but so far he hadn't seen her. Then he wondered if maybe C.J, Toby, Mandy or even Casey would show up, but he prayed that they would wait at least until tomorrow. But he never even dreamed that his next visitor would be who it was.

"Hello Joshua." The unmistakable voice of Joey Lucas called out.

"Joey hi, what are you doing here?" Josh asked as he turned in the direction of her voice.

"I visited you last time I was in town, and I thought I might as well come and see you again. But I would have been here sooner if I realized you were awake. I'm in town to go over the latest polling numbers with Casey and I thought I owed it to you stop by, since I couldn't last time." Kenny translated.

"Wow, Kenny's here too huh?" Josh muttered.

"I missed what he said there." Kenny admitted to Joey who hadn't been able to decipher it either.

"I said, 'Hi Kenny.' Josh replied though everyone knew he was lying.

"Joshua you are a terrible at lying to me. What's wrong?" Joey asked.

Josh's heart sank. He had so far been able to fool everyone else, but he should have known that Joey would have figured it out. She studied people as a way to communicate with them. It wasn't that he didn't want to tell her; it was just that he didn't want to admit it.

"Josh." Joey said softly.

"Would you like me to leave the room?" Kenny asked.

"No Kenny you might need to stay." Josh replied slowly.

"Tell me." Joey demanded slowly.

"I can't see." Josh replied as he accidentally dipped his head down.

"What?" Joey asked.

"I think he said he can't see." Kenny translated for her.

"Josh are you blind?" Joey asked.

"I believe so." Josh admitted.

"Oh Josh." Joey murmured as she gave him a hug.

"What did the doctor say?" Kenny asked for her.

"I haven't spoken with him yet." Josh replied.

"It was a horrible fire Josh. They say that it was a miracle that you even survived for as long as you did. Were you scared?" Kenny translated.

"I don't remember the fire." Josh replied softly.

"It wasn't your fault." Joey stated gently.

"So they tell me." Josh muttered.

"Have you talked to Donna yet?" Joey asked.

"No, I haven't." Josh asked with a puzzled expression.

"You really should. She loves you, you know." Joey replied.

"What?" Josh exclaimed.

"How can you not notice the way that she looks at you? The way that she acted like an attack dog after you were shot? They way that she gets jealous every time that I am around though she pushes you to ask me out." Kenny translated.

"You know sometimes having a guy translate the words you say can give a guy a horrible mental image." Josh joked to which Joey smacked him for. "Ouch. I guess I get no sympathy from you for being blind huh?"

"Don't even joke like that." Joey warned.

"Would it make you feel any better if I told you I am scared to death?" Josh asked.

"I guess." Joey whispered softly.

"Then feel free to feel better because I am scared to death." Josh said as he felt her hand tenderly caress his cheek.

Joey knew that Josh had to be scared if he was freely admitting it. Normally he tried not to let any weakness show. It was how he could have the upper hand on people, because they didn't know what scared him. He was really good at that. Kenny decided that they needed to be alone so he quietly slipped out of the room knowing that Josh probably didn't want him there anymore.

"Joey for right now you have to keep this a secret." Josh begged.

"Why?" Joey asked slowly.

"Just please promise not to tell anyone." Josh pleaded.

"Okay, I promise." Joey replied as she moved Josh's hand to hers so that he could feel her crossing her heart.
