The Vendetta:
Part 8

Christy Ambrose

Several hours later Abby opens the door and walks in carrying a bag.
"Ok Josh out, Sam needs his rest."

"But Mrs Bartlet, we still have a lot of files to go though," Sam
complained

"I don't care, you had a very traumatic experience today and you need
your rest so, out Josh."

After giving Sam a look that said `you're on your own.,' Josh stood up
and left the room.

"Sam, give me what you have already. I'll make a copy and give it to
Ron Butterfield."

Knowing once again when to give up, Sam gave the partial list to the
First Lady.

"Have a good night Sam, I sent someone out to your townhouse and had
them bring back you some things. I even had them include some books,
nothing work related though."

"Thank you Ma'am."

"Your welcome," She told him before leaving.

Going back down to the west wing, Abby goes to her husband's office
and sent for Ron. When he arrived, She handed him the partial list.
"This is what he has done for now. I've told him he needs to rest."

"Thank you Ma'am, I'll have this sent over to the Agents Stetson right
away."

Before he can leave however, Abby stops him with a question. "Just
how good are these agents, Ron?" She asked.

"Well, before this I had heard of them but didn't really know much
about them. After they were assigned to this case I actually looked
up their records, both the public ones and the ones that aren't
public. Ma'am, I've never seen any other agent with as many
commendations as these two have. They have commendations from three
American presidents, the Queen of England, a Prime Minister of
Estocia, The Prince and Princess of Zaqhir, and that's just to name a
few. The public files are basically illegible because of all of the
blacked out areas. I can't believe some of what is actually behind
those marks. Some of the stuff that they went through and just kept
coming back for more is amazing. To top it all off I guess I would
say if anyone can get to the bottom of this it's them."

"Thank you Ron. That's all I needed to know."

~~~~~~~
Back at the agency Lee picks up the phone. "Stetson here."
"Lee it's Melissa, we haven't gotten though all of the records yet.
But I know how anxious you are for this information, so here are the
ten names we've come up with so far." After he had written down all
of the names she had for him, she said. "I hope that'll get you
started. Joanna and I tried to find the most controversial of the
cases that he was involved in."
"Hey this is a great start, just let me know when you get more."
"Ok, well, I'll talk to you later."
As he was hanging up the phone an agent comes in and dropped a folder
on his desk. `What now,' he muttered to himself. Upon opening it he
finds a note from Ron telling him that this is Sam's partial list and
that he'll send the rest over as soon as it's complete.
Lee then picked up the phone and dialed his wife's extension. "Hey I
just had two partial lists delivered to me. How bout you come down
here and we can go over them.
"Ok I'll bring down what I've come up with too and we can compare
them."
"Ok, see you in a few minutes."
Several hours later, after having gone though the three lists and
eliminating the duplicate names, and the ones that are already
deceased, they were left with a list of five names.
After looking at his watch Lee said, "why don't we knock off for the
night and pick up again tomorrow."
Amanda said, "that sounds good to me" around a yawn.
The next morning Amanda and Lee sat in his office discussing strategy.
"Ok, let's start by checking bank records, all phone records and
criminal records and then go from there," Lee said.
~~~~~~~~~

Sam arrived a little later than usual to his office. First thing he
did when he arrived was to call Ron and let him know that he had the
list finished. Next he pushed the intercom button. "Kathy," he said,
"what's on my schedule for today?"

"It's clear Sam."

"What, My schedule has never been completely clear before?"

"Well, it is now."

"By who's order?" Sam asked, wanting to know who he should be upset
with.

"Sorry Sam but, I was told not to say," and with that she hung up the
phone.

Sam leaned back in his chair with a growl of frustration. His morning
was not made any better when Toby walked in a couple of minutes later.

"How are you feeling?"

"I'm fine Toby."

After looking at him for a few minutes Toby said "Alright," and turned
and left the room.

The First Lady was his next visitor of the morning. Sam stands as she
entered the room, "Ma'am, How are you this morning?"

"I'm fine, how's the hand?"

"A little sore, but it feels better than yesterday."

"Here let me see it," Dr. Bartlet says as she reaches for his wrist.
After a few minutes she said, "Well it certainly looks better than it
did yesterday. I just want you to take it easy today and not try to
write or type at all."

"Well, that shouldn't be too hard since someone's cleared my schedule
for the day."

"If you'll promise to take it easy, I'll talk to my husband and Leo
and see if I can get some light, and I do mean light, work for you to
do today."

"I promise"

"Ok, I'll go talk to them, I'll see you later."

About ten minutes later, Kathy comes into Sam's office and sits down
in the visitor's chair in front of his desk, "Ok, here's your schedule
for today," She said before going on to outline a very light schedule,
well light for the White House anyway.

Back at the Agency.

Amanda sighed in frustration, "we're just not getting anywhere with
this. We don't really know much more than when we started. It could
really be any of these guys."

"I know, we'll just have to keep looking," before Lee could say more,
the phone rang.

"Lee, it's Melissa," a woman's excited voice said when he picked up
the phone. "I think I might have found something. Joanna and I were
searching the files this morning and we came across a case that Sam
prosecuted against a local politician. It was huge, had a lot of
media coverage and everything. Well, we looked up some of the
coverage and this guy was quoted as saying I'm going to get you, your
going to pay for this one."

"Melissa, we'll check into it but that really isn't a whole lot to go
on. It could just simply be contributed to a man made very mad over a
judge's ruling."

"That could be but Lee, this guy was ruined. It was a rape case and
Sam utterly trashed this guy. The jury only deliberated thirty
minutes. Then when he got out of jail, rumor has it that no one would
even talk to him about a job. His career was completely ruined."

"Well, what's his name we'll check him out."

"Jacob Packer."

"Ok thanks Melissa, we'll get right on it."

"I'll also keep looking in case this isn't him."

"What was that all about?" Amanda asked her husband after he had hung
up the phone.

"We may have a break here."

"Ok, what do we have?"

"This guy Jacob Packer, was prosecuted by Sam in a rape case which
totally destroyed his career. And he was quoted as saying that one
day Sam was going to pay for this. I think it's at least worth
checking out."

"Ok, I'll get upstairs and start working on it. You can do what ever
it is that you do down here," Amanda told him as she left the room.
